A plant grown so that a part of it — leaves, roots, flowers, or fruit — can be eaten, not counting plants treated in cooking as fruits, grains, herbs, or spices.
A cooking category, not a botanical one, which is why tomatoes count as fruit to scientists but vegetables to cooks. 'Veggies' is the informal form.
